New research from the APC Microbiome Institute in Cork discovered that beta-glucan, found in porridge lowered “LDL” (bad) cholesterol in mice to a similar level as the statin Atorvastatin (Lipitor). Dr George Grimble from the University College London says that consuming 3 grams of beta-glucan daily has the same effects as a statin, without the side effects. To get the required amount of beta-glucan into your system, it would mean you’d have to eat multiple bowls of porridge. Thankfully it’s also available in powder format which can be taken with water or juice, or it can be added to your smoothies, porridge or yoghurt.

Statins come under a range of different names such as Lipitor, Mevacor, Zocor, Pravachol, Crestor, Lescol, Livalo or the ill-fated Baycol which are prescribed by doctors to lower bad cholesterol. However, they come with many side effects such as a weakened immune system, headaches, memory loss, confusion, depression, muscle and joint pain and increased risk of diabetes- to name a few.

Oat beta glucan and reducing LDL

Instant, speedy porridge has a higher glycemic index than traditional porridge because they are made from processing or milling oats more.
